Southern Italy
€1,720$1,953 / Per person
Most southern-Italy trips stop at the Amalfi Coast. We give it three days — enough for Positano and Ravello without the day-tripper crush — and then cross to the heel for the part that surprises people: conical trulli roofs at Alberobello, cliff-cut swimming at Polignano a Mare, and Matera, a city carved into a ravine and lived in continuously for nine thousand years.
Best months: April – June, September – October
In July and August, parts of it genuinely are. That is why this itinerary runs April to June and September to October only, why we move by boat instead of sitting on the coast road, and why we stay in Sorrento rather than in Positano itself.
Met at Naples and driven down to Sorrento. Evening walk and a welcome dinner looking across the bay to Vesuvius.
