Romania remains one of the best-value weeks in Europe and one of the least crowded. This route runs the Saxon heartland — Sighișoara, Sibiu, Brașov and the fortified churches between them — and crosses the Carpathians on the Transfăgărășan, a road built for entirely the wrong reasons that turned out to be one of the great drives on the continent.
Best months: May – October (Transfăgărășan open July – October)
Only about July to October — the high section is closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts annually. Departures outside that window cross the mountains by the Olt valley instead and add a second day in Sibiu; we tell you which applies before you book.
Met at the airport and driven up through the Prahova valley. Evening in Brașov's Council Square with a welcome dinner.
