Atlantic Portugal
€1,540$1,749 / Per person
São Miguel sits 1,400 km out in the Atlantic and still uses the euro. It is green, volcanic and startlingly empty: crater lakes, hot springs you can sit in, and some of the most reliable whale watching in the world. We bookend it with three days in Lisbon so the trip has a city at one end and the middle of the ocean at the other.
Best months: April – October (whales best April – June)
No, but the odds are unusually good — the resident sperm whale population means sighting rates run above 90% across the season, and April to June adds migrating blues and fins. If your trip sees nothing, the operator re-runs it free while you are still on the island.
Check in to the Baixa and take an evening walk up through Alfama for the sunset from Portas do Sol, then a welcome dinner.
